Donation-Day Stocktake: Count and Label Everyday Items
Count a 24-item donation inventory, repair plural and agreement errors, and write a clear handover with full models and explanations.

1. Your task at the donation room
You are helping in a fictional community donation room. The next volunteer needs clear labels. Your job is to count the listed stock, repair the handover and write accurate shelf sentences.
The stock has 24 items across six numbered groups. A pair of shoes is counted as one stock item in this task, although it contains two individual shoes. Use the stock units below; do not add the shoes again. The people in the scene are volunteers and are not part of the 24-item stock.
2. Read the shelf list
Shelf note: Welcome to the donation room. Please use this stock list today. Group 1 has four empty boxes. Group 2 has five toys. Group 3 has three scarves. Group 4 has six children’s books. Group 5 has four pairs of shoes. Group 6 has two watches. That makes twenty-four stock items. Keep each group together. Put a clear label beside every group. The books are for children; children’s tells us who the books are for. Do not count the volunteers as stock. There is also some furniture by the door, but it is not part of today’s list. Ask the next volunteer to keep the new labels. Thank you for helping us prepare the room.
Accessible inventory: six groups
1: four boxes
4 stock items
The boxes are empty.
2: five toys
5 stock items
The toys are on a shelf.
3: three scarves
3 stock items
Scarfs is also an accepted plural.
4: six children’s books
6 stock items
Count the books, not the children.
5: four pairs of shoes
4 stock items
There are eight individual shoes.
6: two watches
2 stock items
Both watches are donations.
Useful words: stock means the things available; a shelf holds things; a handover gives the next person important information; a pair means two things used together. The written list is the complete evidence for every answer. The illustration helps you find the groups.
3. Match and form
Match the first four descriptions to a label, then form two plurals. Use the words in the shelf list.

Before you repair the note, check nouns that are not normally counted, such as furniture.
4. Repair the handover
The volunteer’s rough handover contains these six problems. Correct only the requested part. Keep every quantity from the inventory.

Model answer and explanation

Model answer and explanation
Please use the new labels. I changed box to boxes because there are four. I changed watchs to watches because watch takes -es. The list contains 24 stock items. The furniture by the door is not included.
Check your six shelf sentences: six sentences; six correct quantities; accurate plural spellings; there are with plural groups; four pairs rather than four individual shoes. Check your handover note: name two actual corrections, give a useful reason for each and keep furniture outside the total. You may use stock items instead of items. The shelves hold… is also a natural sentence opening.
6. Explain your choices
Answers 1–4: 4 boxes; 3 scarves; 4 pairs of shoes; 6 children’s books. These are matches to facts in the source, not guesses from the picture. Answers 5–8: toys; watches; boxes; scarves or scarfs. Notice that toys keeps y while boxes and watches add -es.
Answers 9–12: 5 toys; 2 watches; are; furniture. The ninth answer repairs an incorrectly applied y-rule. The tenth adds the missing e. The eleventh repairs verb agreement rather than noun spelling. The twelfth removes a plural ending from an uncountable noun. These are different errors, so avoid one automatic correction for every problem.
Your writing does not have to match the models word for word. The sentence Group 1 has four boxes is equivalent to There are four boxes in group 1. A different number is not equivalent. Four shoes is not equivalent to four pairs of shoes. Use the paired plural guide when you need the spelling decision explained again.
7. Transfer and revisit
Optional transfer: make a five-item inventory of objects in a fictional study room. Use at least one -es plural and one irregular plural. Model: There are two boxes and three people in the room. If your list includes information or furniture, use some or a counting phrase rather than adding -s.
Before handing over any stock list, read it twice. First check the facts and units. Then check noun forms and sentence agreement. A correct total cannot repair an unclear label, and a correctly spelled plural cannot repair the wrong quantity.
