Computer delivery is becoming the standard
IELTS has announced that, from mid-2026, tests will move away from the paper-based format and be delivered on computer. The exact changeover timing varies by market, so the booking options shown by your local test centre are the most useful guide for your date and location.
What Writing on Paper means
In selected markets, IELTS on computer may offer a Writing on Paper option. You read the Writing prompts on screen and handwrite your answers on an answer sheet. The task types, timing, and scoring stay the same; Listening and Reading are still completed on computer.
Check the test that is available to you
Writing on Paper is not available for IELTS for UKVI. Availability can vary by country and test date, so check the official booking information before making travel plans or preparing for a particular format.
