The story
Heat-related deaths in the Phoenix area have risen sharply this year after falling for two years. Maricopa County has confirmed 275 heat-related deaths so far. That is 76% more than at the same point last year.
More than 500 additional deaths are still being investigated because they may also be connected to extreme heat. The final number is not yet known. However, if many of those cases are confirmed, the total could pass 700.
The county’s highest number of confirmed heat-related deaths in one year was 645, recorded in 2023. The county medical examiner does not expect this year to set a new record, but it could become the county’s second- or third-highest year.
The rise is especially concerning because the numbers had gone down since 2023. Local authorities are trying to understand why deaths have increased and what actions could help prevent more of them.
Heat-related death means that dangerous heat played an important role in a person’s death. Very high temperatures can place serious stress on the body, especially when people cannot cool down or get enough water. The investigation process is used to decide whether heat was a cause or a contributing factor.
The figures show why health officials continue to watch heat conditions closely in the Phoenix region. They also show that the number may change as investigators review the remaining cases.
