Your goal

Choose a suitable bag using four clear requirements. Then explain why the other bags do not fit the trip. Allow 25–30 minutes. The bus rules and prices below are fictional learning data, not travel advice.

Read the limits and bag information

Trip limits

You are choosing one packed bag for a day trip. The bus company allows a bag no taller than 45 cm and no heavier than 6 kg. Your lunch, clothes and camera need at least 18 litres of space. Your budget is £40. All weights below are the total packed weights. A value exactly on a limit is allowed.

Bag A: Green

Height: 42 cm. Packed weight: 5 kg. Space: 20 litres. Price: £38.

Bag B: Blue

Height: 48 cm. Packed weight: 5 kg. Space: 22 litres. Price: £35.

Bag C: Red

Height: 40 cm. Packed weight: 7 kg. Space: 20 litres. Price: £32.

Bag D: Yellow

Height: 41 cm. Packed weight: 4 kg. Space: 15 litres. Price: £28.

Bag E: Grey

Height: 44 cm. Packed weight: 5 kg. Space: 19 litres. Price: £46.

Five bags labelled A to E appear below limits of 45 cm height, 6 kg packed weight, at least 18 litres and a £40 budget.
Compare the measurements in the text; the drawings are not to scale.

Choose one answer.

Answer and explanation

too tall

Bag B is 48 cm tall, which exceeds the maximum of 45 cm.

2 Bag C is ___ for the 6 kg weight limit.

too heavy

Its packed weight is 7 kg, above the 6 kg maximum.

3 Bag D does not have ___.

It has 15 litres; the items need at least 18. Enough comes before the noun space.

4 Bag E is ___ for the £40 budget.

Choose one answer.

Answer and explanation

too expensive

It costs £46, which is £6 over the budget.

5 Bag A is ___ to meet the bus weight rule.

Choose one answer.

Answer and explanation

light enough

At 5 kg it is below the 6 kg maximum. Enough follows light.

6 Bag A has ___ for the items.

Choose one answer.

Answer and explanation

enough room

Its capacity is 20 litres and the requirement is at least 18 litres.

7 Which bag meets all four requirements?

Choose one answer.

Answer and explanation

Bag A

A is no taller than 45 cm, no heavier than 6 kg, at least 18 litres and no more than £40.

8 Which statement about Bag B is accurate?

Choose one answer.

Answer and explanation

It is cheap enough but too tall.

B costs £35, within budget, but its 48 cm height exceeds the 45 cm limit.

9 Which statement about Bag C is accurate?

Choose one answer.

Answer and explanation

It has enough space but is too heavy.

C has 20 litres of space, meeting the 18-litre requirement, but weighs 7 kg.

10 Keep the meaning: “Bag D is too small for the items.”

Choose one answer.

Answer and explanation

Bag D is not big enough for the items.

Too small means insufficient size, expressed as not big enough.

11 A new bag is exactly 45 cm tall and exactly 6 kg packed. Does it meet the bus limits?

Choose one answer.

Answer and explanation

Yes. Both maximum values are allowed.

The trip instructions state that values exactly on a limit are allowed. Space and budget would still need separate checks.

12 Which sentence clearly explains a limit rather than only giving a strong description?

Choose one answer.

Answer and explanation

Bag E is too expensive for my £40 budget.

Too expensive plus the budget explains why the bag is unsuitable; very and really alone do not specify the limit.

Explain your choice

Write three or four sentences. Name your chosen bag, give two numerical reasons and reject one other bag with too or not enough. Compare the models and self-check your writing; this section is not automatically graded.

Choice and rejection models

Other wording is possible, but the numbers and meanings must remain accurate.

Practice only. Your writing stays on this page; it is not submitted or saved.

  1. Model answer and explanation

I choose Bag A. It is light enough for the bus because it weighs 5 kg. It has enough space: 20 litres is more than the 18 litres I need. It costs £38, so I have enough money.

  2. Model answer and explanation

Bag B has enough space and it is cheap enough, but it is too tall. At 48 cm, it is 3 cm above the height limit.

  3. Model answer and explanation

Bag D is not big enough for my things. It has 15 litres of space, but I need at least 18 litres.

Self-check

  • I checked all four requirements, not only the price.

  • I kept maximum and minimum limits distinct.

  • I placed enough after adjectives and before nouns.

  • My explanation includes correct figures and a clear reason.
