Conditions in a Shared-Transport Agreement

By the time the old bus route stopped running after 5 p.m., several families in Northmere had already looked for another way to travel between the hill village and the railway station in the valley. They were tired of late arrivals, missed connections, and long waits in cold weather. Although they worked in different places, they all needed a dependable ride. So they signed a shared-transport agreement for a nine-seat van. The document was not written to be strict for its own sake. It was meant to keep the service fair, reduce arguments about timing, and make sure that one person's change of plan would not disturb everyone else's morning. The van runs Monday to Friday. On those days it leaves Cedar Square at 6:45 a.m. and returns at 5:20 p.m. A message is sent each evening so nobody can later claim to have forgotten. Seats are assigned the night before through a text message or the group app. Anyone who has not confirmed by 8:00 p.m. loses the seat for that day, and it may be offered to someone on the waiting list. Morning-shift workers have first priority, followed by students who start classes in town. Every rider must show the weekly pass before boarding, because the driver does not keep a paper list in the van. Each household pays a flat fee of £48 a month. That sum covers fuel, routine servicing, and a small replacement fund for tyres and wiper blades. The group chose a flat fee because the route is short and simple to share, even if fuel use changes from week to week. If a rider asks for a personal detour, such as a stop at the pharmacy or an extra drop-off near the market, the extra fuel is paid by the person who requested it. The agreement says these requests should remain unusual, since the van is shared and the timetable is tight. Cancellations are treated differently depending on notice. A seat cancelled more than two hours before departure costs nothing. Later cancellations count as late notice, and the rider pays half a day’s fee unless the reason is verified illness or a family emergency. The proof must be sent within 24 hours. If one household gives late notice three times in the same month, its booking right is suspended for one week. The aim is not punishment but reliability; in a small service, one empty seat can affect several people. Missing a seat can also leave someone else stranded at the station. The agreement also sets quiet rules. Until 7:30 a.m., riders should keep their voices low because Imran, the usual driver, often takes phone calls from patients before he reaches the clinic. Food is allowed only in sealed containers, and animals are allowed only if they are assistant dogs. Bags may be carried on board, but they must not block the aisle or the back door. These rules were added after a hot week in June, when someone spilled soup and another passenger nearly missed her stop because a suitcase was in the way. The final clause says the group will review the agreement every quarter. Any change needs the approval of two-thirds of the signed households. If fuel prices rise by more than 15 percent, the monthly fee may be adjusted earlier, but only after a 14-day notice period. If the van breaks down, the backup minibus from the bakery can be used on weekdays, provided the riders are already on that day's list. The group liked that rule because it gave them a plan without making them depend on luck, and it meant that an unexpected fault would not become everyone’s problem.

What to review next

Find the words that support each answer. For a mistake, compare the question with the evidence and identify the detail or inference you missed.

A focused practice result shows how you did on these tasks. Use several activities across skills to decide what to study next; one practice score does not certify an overall CEFR level.

Before you practise: a worked example

Look for evidence in the text. Separate what the writer says from what you already know about the topic.

The library normally closes at six, but on Fridays it stays open until eight. When does it close on Friday?

The answer is eight. But introduces an exception to the normal closing time, so the first time mentioned is not the answer.
