A Rail Company’s Bicycle Policy
Northline Rail runs trains between small towns and the coast. Last spring, it changed its bicycle policy after more people began travelling with bikes. Before that, riders often stood in the doorway with their bikes because there was no clear rule. The company wanted journeys to feel safer and quicker for everyone, so it created one simple system. On local trains, two standard bicycles are allowed in the guard’s compartment. Folding bikes are allowed anywhere on the train if they are folded. On busy morning services between 7:00 and 9:00, passengers must book a space for standard bikes before they travel. The reservation is free, but the company asks riders to arrive early at the platform, because the guard checks the tickets and gives directions before departure. Staff also tell cyclists where the marked area is, so that helmets and rain covers do not end up on seats or in the aisle. The company says the policy works best when cyclists plan ahead. If all bicycle spaces are full, staff may ask a rider to wait for the next train, especially on short platforms where loading takes longer. To help with this, Northline Rail added clear signs in each station and trained station staff to answer questions. Some passengers were worried that the rules would be too strict, but many now say boarding is easier than before. In practice, the signs also make it easier for new riders to find the right place to stand and to understand when they can board. The company also reminds riders to keep bags off the seats and to use the marked area near the door for helmets and rain covers. This matters because luggage left in the aisle can block people who need to leave quickly. Northline Rail says it is trying to make train travel practical for cyclists without making the service harder for everyone else. The company hopes that clear instructions will help new riders feel confident and will reduce delays when trains are busy. It also believes that a simple rule is better than a different rule at every station.

What to review next
Find the words that support each answer. For a mistake, compare the question with the evidence and identify the detail or inference you missed.
A focused practice result shows how you did on these tasks. Use several activities across skills to decide what to study next; one practice score does not certify an overall CEFR level.
Before you practise: a worked example
Look for evidence in the text. Separate what the writer says from what you already know about the topic.
The library normally closes at six, but on Fridays it stays open until eight. When does it close on Friday?
The answer is eight. But introduces an exception to the normal closing time, so the first time mentioned is not the answer.
This teaching example is separate from the scored questions. After your test, compare any mistakes with the explanation and revisit the topic before trying again.
