A Community Bus Route under Review

For six months, the Oak Street community bus has linked the railway station, Hillview Estate, the market and the health clinic. It was introduced after shop owners said customers were avoiding the centre because the nearest regular bus stop was two streets away. The service runs free of charge on weekdays and leaves every thirty minutes from 7.30 a.m. until early evening. A small notice at each stop shows the timetable, and the driver also helps passengers with bags. Many older residents use it for small shopping trips, but the first journey of the day is popular with workers as well. Now the route is under review. At a meeting on Tuesday, planners said the bus is often almost full after school, when students travel home, but much quieter between 10 a.m. and noon. For that reason, they are thinking about using a smaller vehicle on calm mornings and adding extra seats on Friday afternoons. They also said they would not introduce a Sunday service, because the volunteer drivers are already busy and some cannot work then. A nurse from the clinic welcomed the idea of an earlier first bus, since several staff members finish night shifts at 7 a.m. and miss the current departure. One shopkeeper argued that the route should stay free, because even a small fare might discourage people who already watch every penny. A short report prepared for the council says the bus has reduced parking pressure near the market, yet it has not shown whether total spending in local shops has gone up. The report also notes that some passengers only use the route twice a week, while others rely on it every day. Residents can send comments until the end of the month, and the council expects to make a final decision in November. Some people want more evening journeys, while others prefer changes only if they do not make the timetable harder to remember. The councillor leading the review said the aim was not to cut the service quickly, but to find a version that fits demand and keeps the route affordable. Until then, the future of the Oak Street route remains open.

    Answer
    Not Given

Not Given. The passage says residents can send comments until the end of the month, but it does not say they will vote. A comment period is not the same as a vote.

    1. True
    2. False
    3. Not Given
    Check answers and explanations

  9. Question 9 · True / False / Not Given

Decide whether the statement agrees with the information. Choose Not Given when the text or recording does not provide the information.

    Answer
    Not Given

Not Given. The passage describes the route, timetable and possible service changes, but it does not say what kind of engine or power the buses use. 'False' would need a clear contradiction, which is missing.

False: Incorrect: there is no statement that contradicts this.

Before you practise: a worked example

Look for evidence in the text. Separate what the writer says from what you already know about the topic.

The library normally closes at six, but on Fridays it stays open until eight. When does it close on Friday?

The answer is eight. But introduces an exception to the normal closing time, so the first time mentioned is not the answer.
