The Community Garden’s First Summer

Last spring, a group of neighbours turned an empty lot behind the library into a community garden. They built six raised beds, filled them with soil, and planted beans, lettuce, and tomatoes in April. On Saturday mornings, people came with gloves, watering cans, and small tools. Children from the nearby school painted wooden signs for each bed, and an older man named Mr. Reed fixed the fence. At first, the weather was dry, so Maya made a simple watering rota. Later, two heavy storms bent some bean plants, but the tomatoes kept growing well. In July, the group picked their first basket of vegetables and gave it to the food bank. By August, the paths were covered with flowers, and more neighbours stopped to talk and help. The team said the first summer was busy, but they were glad the garden had become a quiet, green place in the middle of the town.

    Answer
    Not Given

Not Given. The passage talks about mornings, dry weather, storms, and summer work, but it never says anything about electric lights or evening work.

    Answer
    Not Given

Not Given. The passage mentions a food bank, flowers, and more neighbours helping, but it does not say anything about selling vegetables or about September plans.

In July, the group picked their first basket of vegetables and gave it to the food bank
By August, the paths were covered with flowers
  3. Question 3 · True / False / Not Given

Decide whether the statement agrees with the information. Choose Not Given when the text or recording does not provide the information.

    1. True
    2. False
    3. Not Given
    Check answers and explanations
    Answer
    True

True. The passage says the neighbours changed that exact place into the garden. The other options do not fit because the text does not say the garden started somewhere else, and it is not uncertain.

  6. Question 6 · True / False / Not Given

Decide whether the statement agrees with the information. Choose Not Given when the text or recording does not provide the information.

What to review next

Find the words that support each answer. For a mistake, compare the question with the evidence and identify the detail or inference you missed.

A focused practice result shows how you did on these tasks. Use several activities across skills to decide what to study next; one practice score does not certify an overall CEFR level.

Before you practise: a worked example

Look for evidence in the text. Separate what the writer says from what you already know about the topic.

The library normally closes at six, but on Fridays it stays open until eight. When does it close on Friday?

The answer is eight. But introduces an exception to the normal closing time, so the first time mentioned is not the answer.

This teaching example is separate from the scored questions. After your test, compare any mistakes with the explanation and revisit the topic before trying again.
