Preparing a Small Theatre Show

On Tuesday afternoon, Maya and her classmates met in the school hall to prepare a small theatre show. They checked the script, shared the costumes, and marked the stage with tape. Ben fixed the lights because the room was dark at one side, and Nora practised the music with a phone speaker. Everyone had one job, so the work moved quickly. Maya wrote the order on a card, and Ben kept the card in his pocket. After a short break, Maya asked each actor to speak clearly and stand close to the front. On the day of the show, the group arrived early and worked quietly. They swept the floor, put chairs in three rows, and placed a sign at the door. The teacher smiled and said the show did not need to be perfect, but it did need calm voices and careful timing. When the curtain opened, the actors remembered their lines, and the audience clapped at the end.

Gap 1: “school hall” is correct because the group met there on Tuesday. “Playground,” “library,” and “dining room” are not the meeting place in the passage. Gap 2: “script” is correct because the classmates checked it while preparing. The other choices are not what they checked at that time. Gap 3: “lights” is correct because Ben fixed them when one side of the room was dark. The passage does not say he fixed the curtains, floor, or door. Gap 4: “speak clearly” is correct because Maya gave this instruction to each actor. The other choices do not describe her advice.

What to review next

Find the words that support each answer. For a mistake, compare the question with the evidence and identify the detail or inference you missed.

A focused practice result shows how you did on these tasks. Use several activities across skills to decide what to study next; one practice score does not certify an overall CEFR level.

Before you practise: a worked example

Look for evidence in the text. Separate what the writer says from what you already know about the topic.

The library normally closes at six, but on Fridays it stays open until eight. When does it close on Friday?

The answer is eight. But introduces an exception to the normal closing time, so the first time mentioned is not the answer.

This teaching example is separate from the scored questions. After your test, compare any mistakes with the explanation and revisit the topic before trying again.
