How to approach this practice

Read the passage for its main idea, then return to the relevant sentence or paragraph for each question. Base answers on the passage.

My Favourite Class

My favourite class is English. I like it because we read short stories and talk in pairs. Our teacher smiles a lot, so the room feels calm. I think homework is useful, but I do not like long tests. On Mondays we start with a song, and that makes me happy. I also enjoy drawing new words in my notebook every day. For me, English class is better than math class, because I can speak more and make fewer mistakes.

  1. Question 1 · Yes / No / Not Given

Decide whether the statement agrees with the writer’s or speaker’s view. Choose Not Given when the view is not stated.

The writer thinks drawing new words is a good way to learn English.

    Answer
    Not Given

Not Given. The writer says, 'I also enjoy drawing new words in my notebook every day,' but does not say that this helps learning English. Yes is wrong because the learning opinion is not stated, and No is wrong because the passage gives no negative view about the activity.

I also enjoy drawing new words in my notebook every day
  2. Question 2 · Yes / No / Not Given

Decide whether the statement agrees with the writer’s or speaker’s view. Choose Not Given when the view is not stated.

The writer thinks the teacher gives too much homework.

    Answer
    Not Given

Not Given. The writer says, 'I think homework is useful,' but does not say that the teacher gives too much homework. No is wrong because there is no negative opinion about the amount of homework, and Yes is wrong because that idea is not stated.

I think homework is useful, but I do not like long tests
  3. Question 3 · Yes / No / Not Given

Decide whether the statement agrees with the writer’s or speaker’s view. Choose Not Given when the view is not stated.

The writer thinks songs make Monday lessons boring.

Return to the passage, recording or visual
    1. Yes
    2. No
    3. Not Given
    Check answers and explanations
    Answer
    No

No. The passage says, 'On Mondays we start with a song, and that makes me happy.' This shows the songs make lessons pleasant, not boring. Yes is wrong because the meaning is the opposite, and Not Given is wrong because the writer's feeling is stated clearly.

On Mondays we start with a song, and that makes me happy
  4. Question 4 · Yes / No / Not Given

Decide whether the statement agrees with the writer’s or speaker’s view. Choose Not Given when the view is not stated.

    The writer likes long tests.

Return to the passage, recording or visual
    1. Yes
    2. No
    3. Not Given
    Check answers and explanations
    Answer
    No

No. The passage says, 'I do not like long tests.' So the writer has a negative view of long tests, which is the opposite of liking them. Yes is wrong because it contradicts the text, and Not Given is wrong because the opinion is stated clearly.

I do not like long tests
  5. Question 5 · Yes / No / Not Given

Decide whether the statement agrees with the writer’s or speaker’s view. Choose Not Given when the view is not stated.

The writer likes talking in pairs in English class.

Return to the passage, recording or visual
    1. Yes
    2. No
    3. Not Given
    Check answers and explanations
    Answer
    Yes

Yes. The writer says, 'I like it because we read short stories and talk in pairs.' This shows a clear positive opinion about pair work. No is wrong because the writer does like it, and Not Given is wrong because the opinion is stated directly.

I like it because we read short stories and talk in pairs
  6. Question 6 · Yes / No / Not Given

Decide whether the statement agrees with the writer’s or speaker’s view. Choose Not Given when the view is not stated.

The writer thinks English class is better than math class.

Return to the passage, recording or visual
    1. Yes
    2. No
    3. Not Given
    Check answers and explanations
    Answer
    Yes

Yes. The writer says, 'For me, English class is better than math class.' This is a direct comparison and a clear opinion. No is wrong because it matches the opposite view, and Not Given is wrong because the statement is stated exactly in the passage.

For me, English class is better than math class

What to review next

Find the words that support each answer. For a mistake, compare the question with the evidence and identify the detail or inference you missed.

A focused practice result shows how you did on these tasks. Use several activities across skills to decide what to study next; one practice score does not certify an overall CEFR level.

Before you practise: a worked example

Look for evidence in the text. Separate what the writer says from what you already know about the topic.

The library normally closes at six, but on Fridays it stays open until eight. When does it close on Friday?

The answer is eight. But introduces an exception to the normal closing time, so the first time mentioned is not the answer.

This teaching example is separate from the scored questions. After your test, compare any mistakes with the explanation and revisit the topic before trying again.
