A Note from the Neighbour

Dear Mia, I saw your bike in our garden this morning. I moved it to the front door, and I left a key under the mat. Your little brother was playing with my cat, and he was very kind. Please close the gate after school. I like quiet evenings, but I do not like loud music at night. If you need sugar or milk, come next door. I am home after six. Best, Mrs Green.

    Answer
    To the front door

She says, "I moved it to the front door," so that is where the bike was moved. The garden, next door, and school are not correct.

I moved it to the front door

Next door: Next door is where Mia should come for help, not where the bike was moved.

To the garden: She took it from the garden, not to the garden.

To the school: The school is mentioned in a different instruction, not for the bike.

    Answer
    A key

The note says, "I left a key under the mat." None of the other options matches that detail.

I left a key under the mat

Sugar: Sugar is something Mia can ask for next door, not what was left under the mat.

A cat: The cat belongs to Mrs Green, but it was not left under the mat.

The gate: The gate is something Mia should close after school.

    4. Mrs Green
    Check answers and explanations
    Answer
    Mia's little brother

The note says, "Your little brother was playing with my cat." That makes the little brother the correct answer.

Your little brother was playing with my cat

Mia's school friend: The note identifies Mia's little brother as the child playing with the cat.

Mia: Mia is the person the note is written to, not the one playing with the cat.

Mrs Green: Mrs Green is the writer, not the child playing with the cat.

Please close the gate after school

Move the bike: The bike was already moved by Mrs Green.

Feed the cat: The cat is mentioned, but feeding it is not the instruction here.

Go home after six: Mrs Green says when she is home, not what Mia should do after school.

Return to the passage, recording or visual
    1. To hear loud music
    2. To open the gate
    3. For sugar or milk
    4. To collect the bike
    Check answers and explanations
    Answer
    For sugar or milk

Mrs Green says, "If you need sugar or milk, come next door," so the reason is to get those things. The other options do not match the note.

If you need sugar or milk, come next door

To hear loud music: Mrs Green says she does not like loud music at night.

To open the gate: The gate should be closed after school, not opened next door.

    2. The front door
    3. Talking in the evening
    4. Sugar or milk
    Check answers and explanations
    Answer
    Loud music at night

She says, "I do not like loud music at night." Quiet evenings are what she likes, so that is not the answer.

I do not like loud music at night
    I like quiet evenings

The front door: The front door is where the bike was moved, not something she dislikes.

Talking in the evening: Mrs Green mentions loud music at night; she does not identify evening conversation as the problem.

Sugar or milk: These are things Mia can ask for; they are not something Mrs Green dislikes.

What to review next

Find the words that support each answer. For a mistake, compare the question with the evidence and identify the detail or inference you missed.

A focused practice result shows how you did on these tasks. Use several activities across skills to decide what to study next; one practice score does not certify an overall CEFR level.

Before you practise: a worked example

Look for evidence in the text. Separate what the writer says from what you already know about the topic.

The library normally closes at six, but on Fridays it stays open until eight. When does it close on Friday?

The answer is eight. But introduces an exception to the normal closing time, so the first time mentioned is not the answer.

This teaching example is separate from the scored questions. After your test, compare any mistakes with the explanation and revisit the topic before trying again.
