Part 1 — Volunteer registration

Read the transcript

Emma: Good morning, Riverside Community Centre. This is Emma. How can I help? Daniel: Hi, I'm Daniel. I saw the notice about your community weekend, and I'd like to help as a volunteer. Do you still need people? Emma: Yes, especially on Saturday morning. We have enough people selling refreshments, but we need help getting the hall ready and welcoming families. Daniel: That sounds good. I'm happy to help, although I need to leave at noon for a family appointment. Emma: That's fine. You can set out the tables before the event, then welcome visitors at the main entrance. You won't need to handle any money. Daniel: When should I arrive? The notice says the doors open at ten. Emma: Visitors arrive at ten, but volunteers have a short briefing at quarter past nine. Please come to the lobby first so we can give you a name badge. Daniel: All right. I'll come by bus. My friend offered me a lift, but the bus stops just outside the centre. Emma: That's convenient. We're asking volunteers to bring their own packed lunch. There'll be tea and coffee, and you can refill your water bottle at the kitchen tap. Daniel: Great. I can bring one. I've helped at school events before, but this will be my first time volunteering here. Emma: You'll work with an experienced volunteer, so there'll always be someone to ask. Could you send me your phone number by email today? Daniel: Of course. Thanks for explaining everything. I'll see you on Saturday morning.

Part 2 — Event briefing

Read the transcript

Coordinator: Good morning, everyone, and thank you for giving up your Saturday to help. Before we start setting up, we'll take a short safety tour together. I'll show you the emergency exits and the first-aid point, then you'll join your teams. Coordinator: There's one change to the programme. The storytelling session was going to be in the garden, but rain is expected this afternoon, so it will now take place in the main hall. The children's craft corner will stay in the small room beside the kitchen. Coordinator: Visitors can join the book exchange and the plant workshop without paying. For the book exchange, they bring a book and choose another one. The plant workshop includes a small pot to take home. Drinks from the cafe cost two pounds, and the art stall sells cards made by local students. Coordinator: The art stall closes at half past three because the students need time to pack up. The other activities will finish at four. If someone loses a bag or coat, take it to reception. Please don't leave lost property on the tables in the hall. Coordinator: We'll meet for our final volunteer check at quarter to four, beside the main entrance. Tell your team leader before you go home, so we know who's still here to help clear up. If you need a break earlier, ask another volunteer to cover your place. We want everyone to enjoy the day as well as help our visitors.

Part 3 — Planning the next event

Read the transcript

Karen: Thanks for coming to this planning meeting, Sam. What did you think of Saturday's event? Sam: It went well overall. The visitors enjoyed themselves, but quite a few couldn't find the plant workshop. The map on the programme was too small. Karen: I noticed that too. Next year, let's put large signs at each entrance, with arrows to the activities. We can use different colours for the rooms. Sam: Good idea. I also spent a lot of time answering volunteer emails. Could we use an online form next year, so people can choose a shift and leave their contact details in one place? Karen: Yes, let's do that. I don't think we need a bigger building, though. The centre had enough space, and I'd like to keep admission free. Sam: Agreed. Some visitors asked what would happen to the books left at the exchange. I've arranged to give those books to the local library on Monday. Karen: That's lovely. We should also start publicity earlier. Can you take the posters to the shops on Thursday? I'll send the final design on Wednesday evening. Sam: Thursday is fine. One other thing: the music in the hall made it hard to read. Could we have a quiet reading space upstairs next time? Karen: Definitely. The room upstairs is easy to reach by lift, and it won't be used for another activity. Let's keep the musicians in the hall and put comfortable chairs up there. Sam: Then we've got a useful plan. We don't need to change everything; a few practical improvements should make the next event easier for visitors and volunteers.

What to review next

Listen again to difficult sections, then open the transcript to check what you heard. Repeat a useful phrase aloud and try the recording once more without the text.

A focused practice result shows how you did on these tasks. Use several activities across skills to decide what to study next; one practice score does not certify an overall CEFR level.

Before you practise: a worked example

Listen for the final information, especially when a speaker corrects or changes an earlier statement.

Example transcript: “Let’s meet at five — actually, half past five would be better.” What is the final suggested time?

The final suggested time is 5:30. Actually signals a correction; the first time is replaced by the later suggestion.

This teaching example is separate from the scored questions. After your test, compare any mistakes with the explanation and revisit the topic before trying again.
